Gwin G. Hughes Healthful Living Award
The Gwin G. Hughes Healthful Living Award was established in April 2005 by North Carolina PTA and the Hughes family as a memorial to Mrs. Hughes, NCPTA president 1982-1986, to encourage healthful living habits. The project must feature advocacy and activities that enhance or create child and school health programs that may include quality Health and Physical Education, school meals, staff wellness, a safe environment and family/community involvement.
Special consideration will be given to Units or Councils that provide advocacy and activities to address childhood obesity prevention that include: (1) health education and increasing access to healthy food choices, (2) limiting access to sugar sweetened beverages, (3) increasing access to safe places where children can play, (4) physical education and active play, or (5) limiting children’s screen time, including limits on video games, text messaging and television. Advocacy and activities may also include conversations with your Principal or School Board, letters in your PTA newsletter, or participation in advocacy meetings in your community.
To be eligible for this award, you must apply online by March 1. In your online application (Success Story) you will need to provide the following:
- Your name and email address
- Name of your school PTA and principal’s name
- Number of students in your school and number of PTA members
- Provide description of the program (Success Story) including the following:
a. Support of the PTA mission
b. Advocacy effort and activity
c. Basic steps for implementing the advocacy effort and activity
d. Target audience(s): students, staff, families, community
e. Resources needed for the advocacy effort and activity
f. Estimated costs and funding source
g. Partners involved: school staff, businesses, families, community, other groups
h. Barriers to the advocacy and activity and how you overcame them
i. Estimated number of people who benefitted from the advocacy effort and activity
j. Accomplishments of the advocacy effort and activity
k. Key elements that made the project a success
NCPTA will highlight all eligible applications (Success Stories) on the NCPTA website as well as share them with other statewide partners for additional recognition. The award recipient will receive an award at the Parent Education Conference.
