Codington Elementary Wins
NCPTA Champions of Play Grant!
Margie Butts, a member of the Codington Elementary PTA in Wilmington, deserves high fives all around for taking the initiative to get her PTA off to a running start. Her application for the NCPTA Champions of Play grant was selected as the winner. Codington PTA will receive a $500 grant to support a fun, integrated approach to helping families increase their activity levels and improve healthy choices.
Getting Families On Track
Codington PTA’s theme for the school year is Healthy Child – Healthy World, and they plan to expand on this concept with the Codington Healthy Family Challenge which will help participants track their physical activity minutes and their fruit and vegetable intake over six months!
Along the way, the PTA plans to send e-news with fitness tips, training plans, healthy recipes and reminders about family activities around the county.
Going the Distance
To celebrate everyone’s steps to healthier choices, all participants will be encouraged to join students who are already enrolled in Girls on the Run or STRIDE programs for a fun and challenging 5k event. Plus, families who log the most hours of physical activity will be eligible to win gym memberships, fitness equipment and other prizes to encourage continued physical activity.
Planning for Extra Mileage
Codington PTA hopes to share this project as a model for other schools to get fit as a family. Stay tuned as we track this PTA’s steps to bringing their school, families and community together for healthy changes.
The NCPTA Champions of Play grant will support the Codington PTA Healthy Family Challenge with funding for fitness journals, race scholarships and recognition for winners.
