Family Math Night at Winecoff Elementary
What do you get when you add Winecoff Elementary School and the local Food Lion store…a mathematically magical fun-filled night for the entire family? Or at least that was the case for 281 students and parents on a rainy Tuesday evening in March. The Family Math Night is a community partnership between Food Lion stores and their neighborhood elementary schools. Melissa Hughes, store manager, thought it would be a brilliant idea to have students in grades Pre-K through 5 use the grocery store as a living math lab. And, she was right! All evening kids walked up and down the aisles with their activity sheets finding items and calculating costs. The Math Night concept was developed by Food Lion’s Corporate Office as a way to stimulate learning in elementary years using everyday interactions such as going with adults to the grocery store. The activity sheets are specific to each grade level and correlate with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.
The evening was a huge success with teachers pitching in to volunteer. The store also held drawings for special prizes for both parents and teachers. As a special incentive, the grade level with the highest participation won an ice cream party. Congratulations to Winecoff’s 3rd grade that had 65 people in attendance!
