School Nurse Award
Purpose: To recognize school nurses for dedicated excellence to our children in school health through school
nursing.
Definition: "School nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well being, academic
success, and life-long achievement of students. To that end, school nurses facilitate positive student responses to
normal development; promote health and safety; intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case
management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self
management, self advocacy, and learning." (National Association of School Nurses, June 1999)
Consider these questions when planning your program, projects and activities:
- Does the school nurse work with the PTA and/or school on upcoming PTA programs, projects and activities? (Standard 1)
- Offering workshops for students and parent
- Making sure that programs are health friendly
- Does the school nurse partner with the PTA and/or school to offer health fairs, health days or other specific health related activities? (Standard 1 and 6)
- Does the school nurse work with the administration to provide staff development concerning health and wellness? (Standard 2)
- Does the school nurse work with staff to ensure all student needs are being met? (Standard 2)
- Does the school nurse provide support groups for children suffering from allergies, asthma, diabetes, etc? (Standard 3)
- Does the school nurse partner with the school and school families to minimize school suspensions due to the required kindergarten assessment form and required immunizations? (Standard 3)
- Does the school nurse partner with the PTA and/or school to obtain needed supplies by reaching out to the community? (Standard 4 and 6)
- AED
- Medical supplies
- Classroom first aid kits
- Does the school nurse actively work to improve communication between parents, staff and school nurse regarding student health needs, empowering the parent? (Standard 5)
Eligibility: All registered nurses working to improve student health outcomes through school nursing in partnership with the PTA and/or school.
Requirements:
- Submit a summary, consisting of 500 words or less, describing the school nurse partnership and how school children benefit from this partnership
- This may be an ongoing partnership or a specific project
- A school nurse may be nominated by anyone within the community
- The recipient will receive an award at the NCPTA Parent Education Conference.
